चिरं जीवतु धर्मात्मा राजा दशरथोऽनघः। यत्प्रसादोनभिषिक्तं तु रामं द्रक्ष्यामहे वयम्

ciraṃ jīvatu dharmātmā rājā daśaratho'naghaḥ| yatprasādonabhiṣiktaṃ tu rāmaṃ drakṣyāmahe vayam

Translation (English)

May the virtuous and sinless king Dasaratha live long by whose grace we are beholding (going to behold) Rama's coronation.

M.N. Dutt (1891)

Commentary

May King Dasharatha live long, the people say, by whose grace we witness Rama's coronation. The blessing is heartfelt — they credit the father for the son. Dasharatha's long life has brought them to this moment. The irony, which only the reader knows, is that Dasharatha's life is about to end.
