धर्मज्ञः सत्यसन्धश्च शीलवाननसूयकः। क्षान्तः सान्त्वयिता श्लक्ष्णः कृतज्ञो विजितेन्द्रियः

dharmajñaḥ satyasandhaśca śīlavānanasūyakaḥ| kṣāntaḥ sāntvayitā ślakṣṇaḥ kṛtajño vijitendriyaḥ

Translation (English)

Rama knows the ways of righteousness. He is true to his word and free from envy. He possesses a sound character with forbearance, gentleness and a sense of gratitude. With his senses under control, he is a source of consolation (in stressful times).

M.N. Dutt (1891)

Commentary

Rama knows the ways of righteousness, is true to his word, and free from envy. The triad — knowledge, integrity, and inner freedom — forms the foundation of the Ramayana's ideal character. Envylessness (anasūyā) is especially prized: the ability to see another's good without resentment.
