अतीव सा तु संहृष्टा कैकेयी विस्मयान्विता। एकमाभरणं तस्यै कुब्जायै प्रददौ शुभम्

atīva sā tu saṃhṛṣṭā kaikeyī vismayānvitā| ekamābharaṇaṃ tasyai kubjāyai pradadau śubham

Translation (English)

Filled with immense joy and wonder (at the news), Kaikeyi gifted a beauthful ornament to that hunchback.

M.N. Dutt (1891)

Commentary

Kaikeyi, filled with joy at the news, gives Manthara a beautiful ornament. The gift is sincere — she rewards her maid for bringing such wonderful tidings. The irony is unbearable: she is rewarding the person who plans to destroy the very joy she celebrates.
