मन्थाराया वचश्श्रुत्वा शयाना सा शुभानना। उत्तस्थौ हर्षसम्पूर्णा चन्द्रलेखेव शारदी

manthārāyā vacaśśrutvā śayānā sā śubhānanā| uttasthau harṣasampūrṇā candralekheva śāradī

Translation (English)

Hearing the words of Manthara, Kaikeyi of charming countenance lying in her couch rose, full of joy, like the autumnal streak of the Moon's crescent.

M.N. Dutt (1891)

Commentary

Kaikeyi rises, full of joy. She has not yet been poisoned. She hears that Rama will be crowned and is genuinely happy. The verse is a last glimpse of the Kaikeyi who could have been — the queen who loved her stepson. She rises 'like the autumn moon.' The beauty of this image makes her fall more devastating.
