कामं खलु सतां वृत्ते भ्राता ते भरतस्स्थितः। ज्येष्ठानुवर्ती धर्मात्मा सानुक्रोशो जितेन्द्रियः

kāmaṃ khalu satāṃ vṛtte bhrātā te bharatassthitaḥ| jyeṣṭhānuvartī dharmātmā sānukrośo jitendriyaḥ

Translation (English)

It is true, your brother Bharata has adhered to the path of the virtuous and has followed his elder brother. No doubt, he is righteous, compassionate and self controlled.

M.N. Dutt (1891)

Commentary

Bharata has followed the path of virtue and his elder brother without doubt. Dasharatha reassures himself — and Rama — that there is no rivalry. And there truly is none. The tragedy of Ayodhya Kanda is that no one is evil; circumstances and a wounded woman's words set everything in motion.
