स शिष्यहस्तादादाय वल्कलं नियतेन्द्रिय: । विचचार ह पश्यंस्तत्सर्वतो विपुलं वनम्

sa śiṣyahastādādāya valkalaṃ niyatendriya: | vicacāra ha paśyaṃstatsarvato vipulaṃ vanam

Translation (English)

Valmiki who had his senses under his command received the barkgarment from the hands of his disciple and wandered about in that extensive forest, looking all around.

M.N. Dutt (1891)

Commentary

Valmiki, with his senses under control, walks through the forest. The phrase 'senses under control' echoes the description of Rama himself. Poet and hero share this quality: both are jitendriya — conquerors of the senses.
