kalyāṇābhijana ssādhuradīna ssatyavāgṛjuḥ| vṛddhairabhivinītaśca dvijairdharmārthadarśibhiḥ

Translation (English)

Born in a family of noble descent, he was saintly. A man without meanness. He was truthful and a man of rectitude. The training he received under aged brahmins conversant with dharma and artha made him welldisciplined.

M.N. Dutt (1891)

Commentary

Rama is born of noble descent yet remains saintly and without meanness. Truthfulness and compassion define him. The verse links his aristocratic birth with personal humility — he has every reason to be proud and no inclination toward it.
